Elisabeth

What would you talk about if you could meet your great-great-great-grandmother? What was it like being a woman in the 19th century? What has changed and what remains – maybe painfully – the same?
Frieda Gustavs wrote four letters to her foremother Elisabeth, about strength, love, abuse, feminism – about everything that separates and connects them. The directness of her musical language, moving freely between avant-garde, romanticism and pop, makes for a powerful vehicle for a deeply personal performance. The pure, unadorned voices of Frieda Gustavs, Pitou Nicolaes and Jasmine Karimova are matched with a battalion of 16 trombones. It is hard to imagine a more rich and powerful sound.
